Often it’s because there’s a new edition out, and since the old edition goes out of print—which I agree it sometimes does with suspicious frequency—we couldn’t keep using it if we wanted to (I’ve tried). Or we come across a better text; you do want us to use the best texts we can, don’t you, as long as they’re comparable in price (or cheaper). Sometimes we find a text just as good (or nearly so), but substantially cheaper, surely you’d prefer for us to switch in those cases. And once in a while we switch just for the sake of variety.

Could it be that we students are only an unwanted but necessary adjunct to a university’s activities? I think we need to let the establishment know that we are not just an intrusion into their working day but the very reason for their existence. If we do this, who knows, we might just end up a little better off in pocket for our labors.
