When a moderate number of retinal haemorrhages are present the history of the incident is usually of such a severe event as to be obvious and sufficient to exclude the possibility of child abuse.

General examination A careful search must be made for any sign of injury, such as bruises and injuries in the mouth (including the oropharynx) or on the head and scalp and grip marks on the trunk or limbs. There may be a boggy swelling on the scalp, which can be a considerable size. Often, clinical examination reveals no or only minor bruises to the scalp, but haematomas may be seen at postmortem examination on reflection of the scalp. There may be other skin injuries including burns, scalds, and bite marks.
